Before the Laughter

I made this photograph while walking through San Telmo in Buenos Aires. The performer had not yet begun entertaining the children passing nearby. He stood quietly, almost unnoticed, preparing for a moment that would soon belong to everyone around him.

I was drawn not to the performance itself, but to the silence that came before it.

That brief pause revealed something deeply human: every act of joy begins with an ordinary moment of preparation.

Before applause, there is silence.

Before performance, there is anticipation.

Before memory, there is an ordinary moment that few people notice.

Rather than documenting entertainment, Before the Laughter preserves the unseen interval between preparation and performance. The work reminds us that some of life's most meaningful moments begin quietly, long before anyone recognizes their significance.

This photograph was taken in September 2009 while walking through the San Telmo district of Buenos Aires.

As I explored the neighborhood, I noticed a performer standing quietly before beginning his show for a group of passing children.

The performance had not yet started.

There was no audience gathered around him.

No laughter.

No applause.

Something about that quiet preparation caught my attention. Rather than waiting for the obvious photograph—the performance itself—I chose to preserve the moment just before everything changed.

Looking back now, I realize the image became less about entertainment and more about anticipation.

Every memorable experience has an invisible beginning: a brief moment that often passes unnoticed before it becomes a shared memory.

We often celebrate the moments that everyone remembers.

The applause.

The laughter.

The standing ovation.

Yet every one of those moments begins in silence.

There is always a breath before the first note, a pause before the first step, and a quiet instant before joy becomes something shared.

Perhaps life is asking us to notice those moments more often.

They are where possibility still exists, where nothing has yet been decided, and where hope quietly waits to become memory.

Preserved as the seventh accessioned photograph in the Francisco Colón Studio Photography Wing, Before the Laughter expands the Museum's exploration of the human experience by documenting anticipation rather than culmination.

While many photographs celebrate decisive moments, this work honors the quiet interval that precedes them. It reminds visitors that preparation, expectation, and possibility are often as meaningful as the events that follow.
