Before They Arrived

I made this photograph while visiting Lolas, an Italian restaurant in the Recoleta district of Buenos Aires.

Although the surrounding neighborhood was busy, the dining room remained unexpectedly empty. The neatly arranged tables, warm interior, and untouched place settings created a quiet atmosphere that immediately caught my attention.

At first, I believed I was photographing an empty restaurant.

Looking back now, I realize I was photographing possibility.

Empty spaces often carry as much meaning as crowded ones.

Before They Arrived preserves a brief interval between preparation and presence. Every chair is waiting. Every table has been carefully arranged. Yet the story has not begun.

By photographing the absence rather than the gathering, the work invites viewers to imagine the conversations, celebrations, and memories that have yet to unfold.

We often measure places by the people who occupy them.

Yet some spaces reveal their greatest beauty before anyone enters.

An empty table carries the promise of conversation.

An untouched chair quietly anticipates company.

Sometimes absence is not loneliness.

It is expectation.
