Beyond the Horizon

This photograph was created in September 2014 along the northern coast of Puerto Rico while I was driving toward Aguada to visit family.

I found a beautiful overlook and stopped because I wanted to remember the day.

Before me were dramatic clouds, the blue Atlantic Ocean, tropical vegetation, the red flowers of a flamboyant tree, and the coastline extending into the distance.

Nothing extraordinary was happening.

It was simply a beautiful day.

Sometimes that is enough.

Looking toward the coast, I felt that the land beyond the horizon was still waiting for me to get there.

Looking back, I realize I was not photographing the coastline.

I was photographing the quiet anticipation of continuing the journey.

Beyond the Horizon celebrates a pause within an ordinary drive.

The landscape is not presented as a final destination. Instead, the coastline becomes an invitation toward everything still ahead.

Clouds, sea, vegetation, and distant land share equal importance, preserving the feeling of movement even while the photographer remains still.

Curatorially, Beyond the Horizon is strongest when read through thresholds and first movements. The composition does not require a dramatic event to justify its place in the collection; its meaning develops through relationships inside the frame—distance, scale, structure, atmosphere, and the distribution of visual weight. That restraint is important. It allows the photograph to carry the theme of beginnings through form as well as through biography, giving the work an independent visual life while remaining connected to the artist’s experience.

Every horizon promises another one beyond it.

We spend much of our lives believing happiness waits at the destination.

Yet sometimes it is found on the shoulder of a quiet road, beneath an open sky, before we have arrived anywhere at all.

Perhaps the greatest journeys are not measured by where they end.

Perhaps they are measured by the moments that persuade us to stop along the way.

The photograph ultimately raises a question about the tension between what is known and what has not yet happened. A camera can hold the appearance of a moment, but it cannot hold the entire experience surrounding it. That limitation gives Beyond the Horizon much of its power. What is absent is not a flaw to be repaired; it is the space in which memory continues to work. The image remains fixed while the person returning to it does not.

Preserved as the twenty-second accessioned photograph in the Francisco Colón Studio Photography Wing, Beyond the Horizon expands the Nature collection through a landscape shaped by travel, family, and anticipation.

The work reminds visitors that nature may be experienced not only as destination, but as companion along the road.

Within the Francisco Colón Studio Photography Wing, Beyond the Horizon is retained as part of the archive as a record of beginnings whose consequences were not visible at the time. Its importance is therefore not measured only by subject matter or visual appeal. The work helps establish a recurring Studio principle: personal history can be preserved with emotional depth while the archive remains disciplined about the difference between what the photograph shows, what the artist remembers, and what later interpretation can responsibly infer.
