About the Work

In Fort Lauderdale, a white walkway leads through an opening in the mangroves toward a small pavilion across still water. Francisco Colón made the photograph on April 23, 2015, during a short outing with his friend Sarah, while he was learning more about composition and editing. The trees, exposed roots, and reflections became part of his study of how to guide a viewer's eye through a scene.

The Artist

I took this photograph at a time when I wanted to learn more about composition and editing. I went on a short outing in Fort Lauderdale with my friend Sarah, and I appreciated her time and the help she gave me.

What caught my attention was the view through the mangroves. The walkway seemed to offer a way into the scene, leading across the water to the pavilion. I tried to use the trees on both sides to frame what I saw.

I remember this photograph as part of learning by doing. I was looking closely, making choices with the camera, and grateful that Sarah had come along with me.

The Curator

The mangroves occupy much of the foreground, but an opening between them directs the eye toward the white walkway and pavilion. Their dense leaves and exposed roots create an irregular frame around the more orderly lines of the man-made structure.

The walkway enters from the left and draws the gaze toward the center of the photograph. Water holds the space between the foreground trees and the distant pavilion, carrying softened reflections beneath a cloud-filled sky. The pavilion is small within the frame; its placement gives the surrounding landscape a destination without allowing the structure to overwhelm it.

The composition makes Colón's exercise in looking visible. Depth is built through the relationship between near roots, open water, and a distant point of arrival.

Story Behind the Photograph

Francisco Colón made Beyond the Mangroves in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on April 23, 2015. At the time, he was interested in improving his understanding of photographic composition and editing.

His friend Sarah accompanied him on a short outing. Colón has recalled appreciating both her help and the time she spent with him. He photographed a view across the water in which mangroves open around a white walkway leading to a pavilion.

The photograph records a scene he chose to study while developing his practice. The precise nature of Sarah's advice during the outing has not been documented; what Colón remembers clearly is her presence and his gratitude for it.

Reflection

Learning to see often happens in ordinary increments. A photographer notices an opening between trees, follows a line across the water, and begins to understand why a view holds together.

The image also recalls the generosity that can accompany that learning. Sarah does not appear in the frame, yet her presence belongs to the afternoon in which it was made. The photograph keeps a record of attention to a place and appreciation for someone who shared the time.

The Museum

Preserved as the ninety-fifth accessioned photograph in the Francisco Colón Studio Photography Wing, Beyond the Mangroves documents an early, deliberate study of composition within the Nature collection.

The work is retained with Colón's account of a short Fort Lauderdale outing with his friend Sarah. That account supplies context the landscape cannot show on its own: the photograph was made while he was actively learning and with someone whose help he valued. Together, image and testimony preserve a stage in the development of his photographic practice.
