Echoes of the Corner Café

I often walked past this restaurant in Palermo and admired the interior through its windows.

In the evenings it was full of people.

One day in July 2009, I decided to stop for lunch and found that I was the only customer.

The empty room revealed details that crowds normally concealed.

The bottles behind the bar, the tables, the mirrors, the wood, and the arrangement of the space gave me the feeling of a café from the 1920s or 1930s.

It seemed like the kind of place where generations of people had met to talk, argue, celebrate, and make decisions.

I photographed it because, in that quiet hour, the room itself appeared to remember them.

Echoes of the Corner Café treats an interior as a portrait of the city.

The absence of customers allows the architecture, furnishings, and atmosphere to suggest the lives ordinarily occupying the room.
