A partially filled cup of beer rests beside the Thames in London, its amber contents catching the light while streetlamps dissolve into a softly blurred background. Encountered during an evening walk, the unfinished drink suggested a quiet decision: someone had enough. Their reason remains unknown, but the photograph invites reflection on recognizing when to stop, even when more remains.
The Artist
I was walking along the Thames when I saw this cup. It was simply there, with beer still in it.
What I like about the photograph is the blurred background. London is present, but the cup is unmistakably the subject. The lights lead into the distance while the amber beer holds my attention in the foreground.
The fact that the cup was only partly full made me think someone had knowingly had enough. There was still something left to drink, and perhaps they had decided to stop.
I did not see the person or know their reason. That was the meaning I found in what they left behind. In itself, having enough was a decision.
The Curator
Selective focus gives an ordinary plastic cup clear visual priority. Behind it, the lamps become a receding sequence of soft circles, establishing depth and the setting of an evening walk without competing through descriptive detail.
The warm beer and its reflection form a small concentration of color against the dark surroundings. The cup's transparency allows the light to become part of the subject, while the surface beneath it provides a firm foreground.
An absent person gives the image its human interest. The remaining drink offers evidence of an interrupted activity, although it cannot establish why that activity ended. The title, Enough, introduces the artist's interpretation and leaves room for the viewer's own.
Story Behind the Photograph
Francisco Colón encountered this partially filled cup of beer during a walk along the River Thames in London. He photographed it as he found it, drawn to the cup's separation from the blurred city behind it.
The camera metadata records April 4, 2014. The photograph was made with a Canon EOS 5D Mark III and an EF 28–135mm f/3.5–5.6 IS USM lens at 115 mm, using 1/15 second, f/5.6, and ISO 12,800. The flash did not fire.
When considering the photograph, the artist returned to the beer that remained. To him, it suggested someone recognizing that they had enough. That possibility became the work's title and the central thought behind its interpretation.
Reflection
The cup still held something. That is what made me pause.
We often let the amount remaining decide how long we continue. There is more in the glass, more time in the evening, another thing we could do. It can be easy to keep going without asking whether we still want what is available.
Looking at this cup, I imagined someone making that distinction. Perhaps they had enjoyed what they wanted and reached a point that needed no further explanation. The beer could remain. They could leave.
I cannot know whether that happened. The person is outside the photograph, and their reason belongs to them. But the possibility stayed with me: enough can arrive before something is finished.
There is a small freedom in recognizing that moment. Nothing has to be exhausted for a decision to be complete.
The Museum
Enough enters the Photography Wing as a study of human presence through an everyday object. The person who used the cup is unseen; their possible decision becomes the subject of the artist's attention.
Within People & Daily Life, the photograph extends the collection's interest in pauses, ordinary encounters, and the meanings discovered while walking. Its interpretation remains grounded in the artist's response to the scene, without claiming knowledge of the absent person's intentions.
