Journey to the Horizon
The future remains hidden, yet the road still invites us forward.

About the Work
A descending coastal road curves out of sight beneath towering clouds, transforming an ordinary drive into a reflection on uncertainty, anticipation, and the willingness to continue toward what cannot yet be seen.
The Artist
This photograph was taken in September 2014 while driving across Puerto Rico toward Aguada to visit family.
What caught my attention was the curve.
I have always been drawn to curves because they express movement without revealing everything that lies ahead.
The road descended toward the coast and disappeared around the bend.
Ahead stood the sea.
Above it, towering clouds.
Around me, the green landscape of the island.
Together, they represented a future I could not yet see.
Yet I wanted to continue anyway.
Looking back, I realize I was not photographing the road.
I was photographing the willingness to keep moving toward the unknown.
The Curator
Roads rarely reveal their destinations all at once.
Journey to the Horizon uses the descending curve as a visual metaphor for trust.
The destination remains concealed, yet the landscape continues inviting movement.
The work suggests that curiosity begins where certainty ends.
Story Behind the Photograph
Created during the same September 2014 drive that produced several works along Puerto Rico's northern coast, this photograph records a quiet road descending toward the Atlantic.
The artist stopped because the curve withheld the future rather than revealing it.
Although he was traveling toward family, the image became a broader meditation on every journey whose outcome remains beyond the next turn.
Reflection
We spend much of life wishing we could see beyond the next curve.
Yet if every road revealed its destination immediately, there would be little reason to continue.
The bend asks for trust.
The horizon offers hope.
The journey asks only one question.
Will you keep going?
Sometimes courage is nothing more than answering yes.
The Museum
Preserved as the twenty-sixth accessioned photograph in the Francisco Colón Studio Photography Wing, Journey to the Horizon strengthens the Journeys collection through its exploration of uncertainty, trust, and forward movement.
