About the Work
Beyond the darkened resort, the Caribbean meets the first light of morning. A narrow line of orange divides the sea from a sky still holding the night, while the illuminated pool below glows electric blue. Made during a few private days in Cancún, the photograph became connected to Misma llave, misma puerta—not simply as a record of a place, but as the atmosphere surrounding a memory.
The Artist
I made this photograph from the Marriott in Cancún during a few days spent with her in 2022.
The camera recorded the Caribbean before sunrise: the ocean still dark, the horizon beginning to glow, and the swimming pool below illuminated in blue. But what remained with me was not simply the view.
It was the quiet surrounding those days.
Years later, the photograph became inseparable from Misma llave, misma puerta. The image and the song now occupy the same emotional space—one preserving what could be seen, the other giving voice to what could not be photographed.
The Curator
Misma llave, misma puerta is constructed through three distinct bands of color and atmosphere: the dark foreground, the blue illumination of the pool, and the narrow orange light emerging along the horizon.
The panoramic composition removes much of the resort's physical context, allowing the image to exist between landscape and memory. The blue pool represents the immediate, inhabited world, while the distant horizon suggests something less reachable—a moment already beginning to pass.
Its significance within the Studio comes from the relationship between photograph and song. Neither fully explains the other. Together, they preserve the emotional character of a private experience without revealing the identity of the person at its center.
Story Behind the Photograph
The photograph was made at 7:22 in the morning on November 7, 2022, from the Marriott in Cancún, Mexico.
I was spending a few days with her.
Outside, the Caribbean remained dark beneath a sky slowly receiving its first color. The resort pool glowed blue below the balcony, creating a vivid contrast with the orange line forming along the horizon.
At the time, I photographed the scene because of its light and atmosphere. I could not have known that the image would later become connected to a song or that the few days surrounding it would acquire a different meaning with time.
The photograph now serves as the visual expression of Misma llave, misma puerta. It does not attempt to document everything that happened or identify the person who was there. Instead, it preserves the setting—the hour, the colors, and the quiet—in which the memory continues to live.
Reflection
A photograph can protect a memory without revealing everything it contains.
The place may be named. The date may be recorded. The light may remain visible long after the morning has passed. Yet the person at the center of the memory can remain private—present within the meaning of the image without being exposed by it.
Some photographs tell us who was there.
Others simply allow us to remember her.
The photograph ultimately raises a question about what the frame retains after lived detail begins to recede. A camera can hold the appearance of a moment, but it cannot hold the entire experience surrounding it. That limitation gives Misma llave, misma puerta much of its power. What is absent is not a flaw to be repaired; it is the space in which memory continues to work. The image remains fixed while the person returning to it does not.
The Museum
Preserved as a Studio-only work within the Francisco Colón Studio Photography Wing. The photograph forms a direct connection between the Photography and Music Wings, serving as the visual companion to Misma llave, misma puerta.
Its inclusion recognizes that the value of a photograph may reside not only in its technical execution, but also in its ability to carry personal history across different forms of artistic expression.
Within the Francisco Colón Studio Photography Wing, Misma llave, misma puerta is retained as part of the photograph as evidence that memory changes while the recorded scene remains. Its importance is therefore not measured only by subject matter or visual appeal. The work helps establish a recurring Studio principle: personal history can be preserved with emotional depth while the archive remains disciplined about the difference between what the photograph shows, what the artist remembers, and what later interpretation can responsibly infer.
