Sofia Sleeping on the Moon

This photograph was made while my granddaughter slept peacefully, unaware of the extraordinary journey that had already brought her into the world.

Looking at her, I was not simply seeing a newborn.

I was seeing the love, sacrifice, skill, and determination of countless people whose lives intersected so that hers could continue.

Her mother and father carried her into this world.

Her family surrounded her with hope.

Doctors and nurses gave generously of themselves to make sure she had a fighting chance.

Looking back, I realize I was not photographing my granddaughter sleeping.

I was photographing the beginning of a life filled with possibility.

Sofia was born at 24 weeks of gestation, nearly four months before a full-term birth. At that stage of development, every day carried uncertainty, and even the smallest milestones became extraordinary victories.

Family members, physicians, nurses, and therapists celebrated each additional gram of weight, every successful procedure, and every sign of growing strength.
