About the Work

A young guitarist practices beside a weathered doorway in Granada, preserving the uncertain and hopeful stage before mastery, recognition, or applause.

The Artist

This photograph was created in April 2014 while wandering through the older streets of Granada, Spain.

I had no destination.

Around one corner, I found a young boy practicing guitar in the spring sunlight.

Spain and the guitar felt inseparable, and the scene appeared almost destined to be found.

I asked whether I could photograph him.

He agreed and continued doing exactly what he had been doing before I arrived.

I sensed that he was slightly embarrassed.

Perhaps he wondered whether his sound was good enough, or whether he was important enough for someone to stop and make his portrait.

I never learned his name or obtained an address where I could send the finished photograph.

To me, he remains a future unknown and a future known to someone else.

Looking back, I realize I was not photographing a guitarist.

I was photographing the courage to begin before anyone knows your name.

The Curator

Every accomplished artist was once a beginner.

The First Chord preserves a stage before mastery, recognition, and applause.

The musician performs for himself rather than an audience, while the worn doorway behind him contrasts the age of the city with the beginning of a personal creative journey.

Story Behind the Photograph

During an unplanned walk through Granada's historic streets, the artist encountered a young musician practicing beside an old doorway.

Permission was requested before the photograph was made.

Nothing was staged, and the boy simply continued playing.

No name or contact information was exchanged.

The encounter would have occurred without the photographer, but the decision to stop ensured that one moment within it would remain.

Reflection

Every artist begins as a stranger.

Every song begins with uncertain hands.

Every dream begins before anyone believes it will matter.

Perhaps encouragement is not always spoken.

Sometimes it is simply the decision to remember someone before the world knows their name.

The Museum

Preserved as the twenty-seventh accessioned photograph in the Francisco Colón Studio Photography Wing, The First Chord honors beginnings, artistic vulnerability, and the importance of recognizing potential before achievement.
