The Keeper of Paris

I made this photograph after visiting the Eiffel Tower. Rather than remaining among the crowds, we walked to a quieter place where the city could be admired from a distance. There stood the statue, silently overlooking Paris as it had done for generations.

As I photographed the scene, I realized I wasn't only looking toward the city. My attention kept returning to the person beside me, whose presence made the city feel even more beautiful.

Sometimes a photograph preserves what is in front of the camera.

Sometimes it preserves what was happening just outside the frame.

The Keeper of Paris explores the relationship between observer and memory. The statue serves as a symbolic guardian, standing motionless while generations of visitors arrive, depart, and carry their own stories through the city.

Yet the photograph subtly reminds us that every observer has another perspective beyond the frame. While the monument watches over Paris, the photographer's attention rests elsewhere, transforming a familiar landmark into a deeply personal moment.

The work suggests that what gives a place meaning is often not the monument itself, but the person with whom we experience it.

This photograph was taken on April 26, 2014, after visiting the Eiffel Tower. Rather than remaining at the monument itself, we crossed the river and paused at a quieter location where Paris could be appreciated from a different perspective.

Standing there was the statue that inspired the title The Keeper of Paris. From its elevated position, it appeared to watch over the city as visitors came and went throughout the day.

As I framed the composition, I couldn't help but notice the parallel unfolding around me.

The statue was watching over Paris.

I was quietly watching someone standing beside me.

That moment never appears in the photograph, yet it has become inseparable from it. Every time I return to this image, I remember not only the city before me, but the quiet happiness of sharing that view with someone else.

The statue continues to keep watch over Paris.

The photograph keeps watch over the memory.

Some memories are never visible in the photograph itself.

They exist just beyond the edge of the frame—in a conversation, a shared silence, or the simple presence of another person standing nearby.

Years later, we may no longer remember every street we walked or every building we admired.

We remember who stood beside us while we were there.

Perhaps every photograph has two stories:

the one the camera records...

and the one only the heart remembers.

Preserved as the fourth accessioned photograph in the Francisco Colón Studio Photography Wing, The Keeper of Paris explores the unseen relationship between place and companionship.

Together with the earlier exhibits in the Founding Collection, it demonstrates that photographs often preserve not only landscapes and architecture, but also the quiet moments of human connection that give those places lasting meaning.
