The Quiet Introduction captures a chestnut horse encountered during a walk in Killeen, Texas, on December 24, 2017. Standing quietly in its pasture near the home of Francisco Colón's former wife, the horse turned its attention toward the photographer, creating a brief moment of recognition between them. Its steady gaze, falling blond mane, and the softly rendered fence and trees transform an unplanned encounter into a quiet study of presence and connection.
The Artist
I was taking a walk in Killeen, Texas, near my former wife's home when I came across this horse.
I wasn't out looking for a horse to photograph. It was simply there, standing in the pasture, and for a moment it seemed just as interested in me as I was in it.
What caught me was the way it looked directly toward me. There was no action and nothing dramatic happening. It was just a quiet exchange of attention.
I raised the camera and made the photograph.
Sometimes that is all a photograph needs: you notice something, it seems to notice you, and for a few seconds the two of you occupy the same moment.
The Curator
The Quiet Introduction is structured around the horse's direct gaze. Its face occupies the visual center of the photograph, while the body extends toward the left, preventing the composition from becoming rigidly symmetrical.
The blond mane falls irregularly across the forehead and between the eyes, giving the animal an individual presence rather than the appearance of a formal equine portrait. The upright ears reinforce its attentiveness, while the dark muzzle provides a strong visual anchor beneath the eyes.
Behind the horse, the shallow rendering of the pasture, white fencing, and trees establishes place without competing with the subject. The surrounding space is important: the photograph remains an encounter within the horse's environment rather than becoming an isolated study of the animal.
Story Behind the Photograph
On December 24, 2017, Francisco Colón was walking near his former wife's home in Killeen, Texas, when he encountered a chestnut horse standing in a nearby pasture.
The photograph was not the result of a planned portrait session. During the walk, Colón noticed the horse and photographed it as the animal turned its attention toward him.
Made at a focal length of 190 mm, the photograph compresses the surrounding landscape while retaining enough of the pasture, fencing, and trees to preserve the circumstances of the encounter.
What began as an ordinary walk produced a brief exchange of attention between photographer and subject.
Reflection
Recognition does not always require language.
Sometimes it exists only in the moment when one living being becomes aware of another.
The significance of such an encounter may be small by any conventional measure. Nothing happened before the photograph that needed explanation, and nothing needed to happen afterward.
For a moment, each simply noticed the other.
Photography can preserve that kind of introduction.
The Museum
The Quiet Introduction is preserved within the Francisco Colón Studio Photography Wing as part of the collection's continuing study of observation, presence, and unexpected encounters.
Made during an ordinary walk in Killeen, Texas, the photograph demonstrates a recurring characteristic of Colón's practice: significant subjects are often discovered rather than sought. The camera becomes a means of responding to something that has interrupted the photographer's attention.
The horse's direct gaze gives the photograph its central relationship. Although the identity and history of the animal are unknown, the photograph does not require them. Its significance rests in the brief visual acknowledgment preserved between subject and photographer.
The work also belongs to a broader group of photographs within the Studio in which solitary subjects are given sufficient surrounding space for their presence, rather than activity, to become the principal event.
