About the Work

A squirrel pauses upright upon a broad tree branch in a park in Lake Worth, Florida, watching its surroundings with bright-eyed attention. The diagonal trunk leads toward the animal while an overhead branch forms a natural canopy, enclosing the moment within layers of softly rendered green foliage. Its alert posture and delicate expression transform an ordinary wildlife encounter into a quiet portrait of awareness, curiosity, and life within the trees.

The Artist

I do not specifically remember taking this photograph, but I recognize the setting. During this period, I frequently walked to a park in Lake Worth, Florida, where I photographed nature and the wildlife I encountered. For a time, conflicting metadata led me to believe that this image might have been made in Mexico City. Finding the original RAW file restored the correct date and confirmed what my memory had been telling me: this small encounter belonged to Florida. The squirrel’s alert expression and upright posture made it feel less like a passing animal and more like a quiet observer watching me in return.

The Curator

The composition is structured around the strong diagonal movement of the tree trunk, which carries the viewer’s attention upward toward the squirrel. Positioned left of center and looking into the open space on the right, the animal is given both visual balance and room for its gaze. A softly blurred branch across the upper frame creates a natural enclosure, while the green background dissolves into broad areas of color and light. The shallow depth of field separates the subject without removing it from its environment, producing an intimate wildlife portrait defined by stillness and alert attention.

Story Behind the Photograph

The photograph was made during one of the artist’s visits to a park he regularly walked to in Lake Worth, Florida. Although he no longer remembers the precise moment of capture or the park’s name, the original Canon RAW file establishes the photograph’s origin on June 14, 2017. A later copy contained an embedded creation date from November 2018, temporarily suggesting that the image had been made while the artist was living in Mexico City. Examination of the original file resolved the conflict: its creation, file-creation, and modification timestamps all correspond to the Florida capture. The image therefore preserves not only a quiet wildlife encounter, but also an example of how original source files can restore the history of a photograph.

Reflection

Memory and metadata do not always agree. A date attached to a later copy can move a photograph across borders and years, while something less measurable continues to insist that it belongs elsewhere. Here, the original file returned the image to the place the artist remembered. The squirrel remains suspended in its moment of attention, but the photograph also becomes a meditation on the fragile connection between an image, its history, and the evidence that allows that history to be recovered.

The Museum

Presented within the Nature & Stillness exhibition, The Quiet Lookout documents a brief encounter with urban wildlife in Lake Worth, Florida. Its archival record also demonstrates the importance of establishing a source-file hierarchy when conflicting metadata is present. The original RAW file is treated as the authoritative record for the photograph’s capture date and location, superseding the inconsistent date found in a later derivative copy.
