The Road to Discovery

This photograph was created in Old San Juan in September 2014.

I was walking alone.

Or perhaps more accurately, I was walking with my camera.

Almost every street in Old San Juan carries a story that invites you to continue.

This one happened to be the street I encountered first, and it had fewer people than many of the others.

I waited nearly twenty minutes for the street to clear.

For a brief moment, it belonged only to the buildings, cobblestones, colors, and light.

I wanted to walk uphill and decide whether to turn left or right at the end.

For some reason, I did not.

When I travel with my camera, I rely on instinct.

Sometimes it says to go.

Sometimes it says nothing.

When it says nothing, I do not force the journey.

Looking back, I realize I was not photographing a street.

I was photographing the quiet confidence of trusting curiosity without needing to know where it would lead.

The Road to Discovery explores intuition as part of the photographic process.

The empty street appears to invite continuation, yet the artist chooses not to follow it.

Patience creates the photograph.

Instinct determines its boundary.

The work reminds viewers that discovery includes knowing when to move forward and when a single observed moment is enough.

During a solitary walk through Old San Juan, the artist found a street whose architecture, cobblestones, and rising curve attracted him.

He waited approximately twenty minutes for pedestrians to leave the frame.

Although he initially intended to continue toward the unseen intersection above, intuition suggested stopping.

The resulting work records both the street and the unmade decision beyond it.

Not every road asks to be followed.

Some simply ask to be noticed.

Curiosity begins the journey.

Patience reveals the moment.

Instinct decides when enough has been seen.

Sometimes discovery begins by listening when the road quietly says: remember this.
